FEVER

The boy is lying quietly in wet blankets. His mother has been changing them every hour, but they always turn into burning and strangling bounds within a couple of minutes, wet through and through.

He is breathing fast, his inhaling is shallow. From time to time, soft whispers are heard in the room. “Mom… Mom…”

His mother is sitting next to his bed, hardly able to keep her swollen and red eyes open.

At the beginning of night, the doctor arrives and asks on the boy’s condition. He speaks silently, as if he could wake the child up.

The temperature has not changed, being still slightly below forty-one degrees.

The doctor clearly sees that the child is not feeling better at all – his eyes disappear in dark shadows, his cheeks are empty, his skin has turned very pale. He is sweating all over. Worst of all, his organism has weakened – he doesn’t toss himself around on the bed in painful nightmares and hallucinations any more, just lies quietly.

The doctor looks into to the teary eyes of the mother and explains to her silently but firmly, what he intends to do: it is time for caffeine, ephedrine, and extracts from green tea… We need more fire, more heat, more blankets…

“I have tried to make it easier for him, to help him find his relief with all other means available, but nothing has worked.”

The mother is nodding shakily and her mouth is moving, as she is trying to tell him that she knows that. But she is unable to make any sound.

She stands calmly, her face wet with tears, watching the doctor as he applies the most drastic treatment of all.

The mother firmly holds her child’s fingers thinned and weakened by two days of fever. The doctor is sitting opposite her, clutching the boy’s other hand. The translucent skin, loose and colorless, painfully contrasts with the doctor’s full and dark red palms.

The child tosses himself from one side to the other, his eyes closed, wheezing and moaning with pain. “Mom! My back… ah…”

Suddenly, he stops. His motionless body drops deep into blankets, seeming inappropriately small for the big mattress and covers surrounding him like waves of endless ocean. He doesn’t whine any more. He doesn’t move.

He doesn’t breathe.

The mother’s hand darts against her mouth. She is trying not to scream aloud, but she cannot help it. Her eyes, opened wide and flooded with new tears, meet the doctor’s calm and happy smile. He nods.

Together, they carefully turn the boy onto his stomach and uncover the skin on his back.

And there, just below his tiny shoulders, two small and fragile wings are coming to life, glittering in the light of the rising sun.

The mother kneels next to the bed and cries and cries forever, letting out all the tension of the past days and all her fears, as if she has just left a dark and dangerous cave of madness after a long journey that seemed to never end.

The boy is breathing deeply and calmly now. He has fallen into a sound and strengthening sleep and is enjoying his first dream of flying.

She feels a firm palm resting on her shoulder. The doctor is leaving. No words are necessary. He smiles in reassurance and opens the door. At the threshold, he takes a deep breath, stretches himself for a good minute, then spreads his huge strong wings with dark blue fibers and softly slides down into the depth of the city.
